The Calgary Roof
De-Icing FAQ

Expert Answers for Homeowners

This guide addresses the most common concerns regarding ice dams, energy efficiency, and professional installation in the Calgary climate.

Ice Dams & Safety

What actually causes an ice dam on a Calgary home?

Ice dams occur when heat escaping from your attic melts the snow on the upper parts of your roof. This melt-water flows down to the eaves (the overhang), which are much colder because they aren’t over a heated room. The water re-freezes at the edge, creating a “dam” that traps subsequent melt-water. This trapped water eventually backs up under your shingles and into your walls.

Are icicles a sign of a bigger problem?

Small icicles can be natural, but massive “glaciers” hanging from your gutters are a primary indicator of an ice dam. These pose a structural risk to your gutters and a significant safety hazard to anyone walking below.

My roof only leaks during a Chinook. Do I still need a system?

Yes—in fact, Chinooks are the most dangerous time for your roof. The rapid melt creates a high volume of water that hits frozen gutters and downspouts in the shade. This is when most “Shadow Dams” form. Our systems are designed to keep those drainage paths open before the Chinook melt hits its peak.

Technology & Performance

How is "Self-Regulating" cable different from standard hardware store heat tape?

Standard “constant-wattage” heat tape stays at the same temperature regardless of the weather, often leading to burnout or wasted energy. Self-regulating cable is “smart” at the molecular level. As the temperature drops, the cable’s core becomes more conductive, increasing its heat output. When the sun comes out, it automatically dials back its power draw.

Can I leave the system on all winter?

With an Electrek Automated System, you don’t have to worry about it. Our NEMA-4X controllers use moisture and temperature sensors to ensure the system is only drawing power when conditions are met. If you have a manual system, we recommend only turning it on during heavy snow cycles or Chinook-induced melt periods.

Will the heat cable damage my shingles or gutters?

No. Our Self-Regulating cables and gutter heat trace systems are designed to operate at temperatures that melt ice without ever reaching levels that would degrade asphalt shingles or warp aluminum gutters. We use professional-grade clips that secure the cable without penetrating your roof’s waterproof membrane.

Cost & Efficiency (OpEx)

How much does it cost to run a roof de-icing system in Calgary?

This is our most common question. By using Self-Regulating technology and Automated Logic, we minimize the Operating Expense (OpEx). A typical system for a single problematic valley might cost less than a few lattes per month during the peak winter season. It is significantly cheaper than a single $5,000 insurance deductible for water damage.

Does it use a lot of electricity when it's not snowing?

No. Because the system is automated, it remains in “Standby Mode” when the roof is dry or the temperature is above freezing.

Can’t I just buy a heat tape kit and install it myself?

You certainly can, but hardware store kits are “constant wattage” and have a very high failure rate—often lasting only 1–2 seasons. They also lack the safety certifications for constant water immersion. An Electrek system is a permanent infrastructure upgrade, engineered to last 20+ years, saving you from the “buy-break-replace” cycle.

Installation & Professionalism

Why do I need professional installation for this?

Most heat tape failures are electrical. Our electricians ensure the system is properly grounded, has the correct GFC protection, and—most importantly—that your home’s electrical panel can handle the “inrush” current that occurs during -30°C startups. Electrek’s “Managed Installation” ensures your 10-year warranty is fully protected.

When is the best time to install a de-icing system?

Ideally, between April and October. While we can install in the winter, it is much more efficient (and cost-effective for you) to install while the roof is dry and shingles are pliable. If you are seeing icicles now, booking a spring installation ensures you are protected before the next winter cycle begins.

Master Electrician's Insight

In Calgary, the Chinook is our biggest enemy. The rapid 20-degree temperature swing creates massive amounts of melt-water that can’t drain fast enough because the downspouts are still frozen in the shade.

We design our systems specifically to handle these ‘Rapid Melt Events,’ ensuring your gutters are clear before the water starts moving.

The Annual Safety Toggle

Even the best safety equipment needs a check-up. We recommend a ‘Safety Toggle’ every October.

Press the ‘Test’ button on your system’s GFI outlet. If it clicks and cuts power, you’re good to go.

If not, call us immediately—your protection depends on that circuit being active.

If you have a mid-aged home and want to eliminate the hassle of extension cords, a hard-wired Semi-Auto Protection system provides a professional, switch-controlled solution integrated directly into your electrical panel.

Whether you are protecting a character home in Altadore or a modern masterpiece in Marda Loop, the physics of ice remain the same.

Don’t wait for the next “ice glacier” to form. Let’s design a system that protects your home and optimizes your energy costs.
