Energy Efficiency Guide

Powering Your Protection

We exclusively utilize advanced self-regulating cable technology. Unlike constant-wattage heat tape, these systems automatically decrease power output as the roof warms, drastically reducing energy consumption.

Dedicated Circuitry & Load Management

Heating cables require a significant “startup surge” when they first activate in cold temperatures.

The Requirement: We generally require a dedicated 20-amp circuit for the de-icing system.

Why it matters: Sharing a circuit with your garage door opener or outdoor Christmas lights can lead to frequent breaker trips, leaving your roof unprotected during a storm.

Electrical Requirements for Roof De-icing System

We perform a full Load Calculation on your existing panel. If your home in an older area like Scarboro still has a 60-amp or 100-amp service, we ensure the system is balanced so you can still run your dryer and stove while your roof stays clear.

Nuisance trips are a sign of improper protection. Book an Electrical Audit to ensure your breakers are GFEP compliant.

GFI Equipment Protection (GFEP)

Standard household GFI outlets (the ones with the ‘test’ button) are designed to protect humans from shock, but they can be too sensitive for long heat cables.

The Requirement: We install Equipment Protection breakers or outlets.

Why it matters: These are engineered to ignore the minor “leakage current” inherent in long heating cables while still providing 100% fire and safety protection.

The Result: No “nuisance tripping” on Christmas morning—just consistent, reliable heat.

120V vs. 240V Systems

Depending on the size of your roof, we will recommend either a 120V (standard plug) or a 240V (hard-wired) system.

120V Systems: Ideal for smaller areas, dormers, or Manual Protection tiers.

240V Systems: The gold standard for Full-Auto Protection on large estates. 240V is more energy-efficient for long cable runs and allows for much larger coverage areas.

For older bungalows where a constant slow drip is the primary concern, Manual Protection offers the industrial-grade power needed to keep eave lines clear without the cost of a complex install.

Master Electrician's Insight

Most homeowners don’t realize that a de-icing cable’s electrical personality changes based on the weather.

In the trade, we call it the ‘Inrush Current.’ When that cable is sitting in a frozen Calgary gutter at -20°C, it can pull up to three times its normal operating power for the first few minutes it’s turned on.

If your system is sharing a circuit with your garage heater or a deep freezer, that initial ‘Cold Start’ will trip your breaker every single time.

That’s why we insist on dedicated circuits and precise load calculations.

We don’t just want your system to work; we want it to work when conditions are at their absolute worst.

The "Voltage Drop" Factor

In large Calgary homes, like those in Aspen Woods, running a 120V cable over a 100-foot roofline can cause a ‘voltage drop,’ which makes the end of the cable colder than the start.

By opting for a 240V Semi-Auto or Full-Auto system, we ensure even heat across every inch of your gutter, regardless of how long the run is.

From the 100-amp panels of Britannia to the 200-amp smart panels in Mahogany, we ensure your power matches your protection.

If you have a mid-aged home and want to eliminate the hassle of extension cords, a hard-wired Semi-Auto Protection system provides a professional, switch-controlled solution integrated directly into your electrical panel.
