In Calgary, “Spring” isn’t just about flowers; it’s about the massive volume of water trapped in your yard and on your roof finally letting go. If that water has nowhere to go, it finds its way into your basement.

The Gutter "Post-Mortem"

After a winter of fighting ice, your gutters might be sagging or pulled away from the fascia.

The Task: Check all bracket connections. If an “ice log” sat in your gutter all winter, the weight may have changed the “slope” (pitch), causing water to pool instead of drain.

If you have a Manual Protection system, spring is the time to inspect the cable for any nicks from falling ice or debris before storing it for the summer.

If your downspouts are pouring water within 6 feet of your house, you are risking thousands in foundation repairs.

Downspout Extensions

The 6-Foot Rule

During the Spring Melt, the ground near your house is often still frozen (“frost in the ground”), meaning it can’t absorb water.

The Problem: Water pouring out of a downspout right at the corner of your house will seep straight down your foundation wall.

The Solution: Ensure downspouts extend at least 6 feet (2 meters) away from the foundation to a sloped area of the yard.

The "Hidden" Ice Blockage

Even if your roof is clear, the underground drains or the bottom of your downspouts might still be frozen solid in the shade.

The Risk: Water will back up the entire downspout, freeze at night, and burst the aluminum seams.

Use your Semi-Auto or Full-Auto system during the first few “warm days” to ensure the entire vertical path is clear before the big melt starts.

Spring Readiness Checklist

Clear the Eaves

Remove any leftover leaf debris that was trapped under the snow.

Inspect the Heat Cables

Look for any signs of movement or shifted clips.

Check the Grade

Ensure the soil around your foundation hasn’t settled, creating a “bowl” that traps water.

Sump Pump Test

If you have a sump pump, pour a bucket of water in to ensure it triggers before the melt peaks.

During a heavy Calgary spring melt, the water volume can be so high that it actually ‘back-fills’ into the lower sections of your downspouts.

If your de-icing cables were installed by a non-professional, the connection points might not be rated for temporary submersion.

I’ve seen dozens of systems fail in April because water seeped into a junction box that wasn’t NEMA-4 rated.
